Today is a challenging day because we need to get through two passes; luckily, we have camped close to the first one so it won’t be as difficult as it is for most of the other trekkers.
The views are fantastic and we will be able to visit two archeological sites (Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca). We will also observe the flora and fauna of the cloud forest. Our campsite is located in Chaquicocha (3600m/11800ft) which is one of the quietest sites that offers beautiful views of the sunset over the mountains.
DISTANCE: 12 km
Today will be a relaxing day and we will be able to enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes the Inca Trail has to offer. With a relatively short distance to cover what is known as the flat path (soft ascents and descents) we will have spectacular views of the Andes Mountains in the distance.
We will visit two archeological sites (Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna) this is by far one of the most impressive days of the trek. Our campsite for tonight is located by the sites of Wiñay Wayna (2680m/8792ft) at which we will arrive in the afternoon, we will have a visit once installed.
DISTANCE: 16 km
Today is the most awaited day. We will wake up very early in the morning (3:30AM) and after breakfast will continue toward Intipunku (Sun Gate). If the weather allows it, we will be able to see how the sun illuminates the majestic Machu Picchu site in its entire splendor. As we get closer to Machu Picchu site the views become more and more impressive. After passing the last checkpoint, we will have a 2-hour guided tour then plenty of time to explore on your own.
If you want to hike up to Huaynapicchu you can do it afterwards, the hike takes around 90 minutes and tickets must be booked in advance, only 400 people are allowed to hike this mountain per day. Once you are ready to leave the site, we will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where we will have lunch (lunch is not included).
From the station, we will board the train back to Ollantaytambo and then our bus to Cusco. Drop off at your hotel is included.
Porters will carry up to 7 KG or 15LBS of your personal items. This includes your sleeping bag and air mattress (if you bring or rent one). These two items will weigh about 3.5 KG or 7LBS.
Daypacks can be any size for hiking, but we always recommend the smaller, the better. Inside Machu Picchu, no bag larger than 25L will be allowed in. If larger, you to rent a locker outside the citadel gates.

It will get crowded but with government regulations in place, there will be enough space for everyone. To improve your experience along the Inca Trail, we have the privilege of being the only tour operator camping at Llactapata. Where you have a great lookout point to Machu Picchu! However, if crowding is a concern, we recommend that you book your permits in advance(at least 5 to 6 months) or consider one of our alternative treks!
Each group will have 1 cook. The number of porters depends on the size of the group. For a group of 2 trekkers, there will be 4 porters, 4 trekkers will have 6 porters, 6 trekkers will have 9 porters, and 8 trekkers will have 12 porters.

The Inca Trail is a 42km (24.4 mile) hike through the Andes in the Cusco region. The maximum altitude reached is 4,217m/13,907ft. On the second day of the trek, we will hike up two mountains. This question has been highlighted by most of our trekkers, especially by female trekkers, that require a private, clean and sanitary toilet. Amarutrek Expeditions provides toilet facilities that have an individual tent and a camping toilet with a seat. Our toilets are always set up at a comfortable distance from our campsite. At night, if you need to use the toilet it is readily accessible and clean, unlike the dirty facilities supplied by the government.
In this scenario, if you are unable to finish the trek due to a health reasons, Amarutrek Expeditions will assist you to the nearest town for help with transportation. We always carry oxygen on our treks for any respiratory problems. In extreme cases, a helicopter pick up can be arranged at your own expense. (Travel insurance required). There are no refunds in the unlikely situation that you are unable to finish the trek.
Generally, those who have to be assisted off the trail are taken to Ollantaytambo and if they recover quickly they may continue their journey to Aguas Calientes (cost incurred by trekker) and visit Machu Picchu with their group.
